Kazakhstan and Tajikistan Intend to Increase Trade Turnover to $2 Billion

Kazakhstan and Tajikistan plan to increase the volume of mutual trade up to $2 billion, Prime Minister Alikhan Smailov said at a meeting with President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon in Astana.

A. Smailov emphasized that Tajikistan is one of the most important trade and economic partners of Kazakhstan in the region. At the end of 2022, bilateral trade increased by 19% and reached $1.4 billion.

“We see significant potential for further expansion of mutual trade. In accordance with the task set to bring the trade turnover to $2 billion, we are working together with the Government of Tajikistan to expand trade and economic relations,” the head of the government of the Republic of Kazakhstan emphasized.

A. Smailov recalled that on May 3, a number of important commercial documents were signed at a joint business forum , incl. on the supply of wheat and sunflower oil.

“We are ready to cooperate with Kazakhstan in all areas, without any restrictions,” said the head of Tajikistan, Emomali Rahmon, in turn.

At the meeting of heads of state, President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev also focused on the prospects for increasing the volume of mutual trade in the agro-industrial sector. Last year, the turnover of agricultural products between the countries increased by 40%, exceeding $500 million.

“Kazakhstan is one of the largest suppliers of wheat and flour to Tajikistan. At the same time, we have reserves to increase the export of vegetable oils, pasta, dairy products and confectionery. In turn, Kazakhstan is interested in systematically importing fruits and vegetables from Tajikistan. We agreed to consider the prospects for setting up joint ventures for the production, processing and storage of agricultural products. For the effective and timely implementation of the agreements reached, a Roadmap was signed to enhance cooperation in the field of agriculture until 2025. Against the backdrop of global instability, these measures will make an important contribution to ensuring the food security of our states,” K. Tokayev emphasized.

As a result of the talks between the heads of the two states, the following documents were signed, in particular:

  1. Declaration on allied interaction between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republic of Tajikistan;
  2. Protocol between the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Customs Service under the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan on the organization of the exchange of preliminary information on goods and vehicles transported between the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Republic of Tajikistan;
  3. Roadmap for enhancing cooperation in the field of agriculture between the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic of Tajikistan for 2023-2025;
