The Exchange of Students Between Higher Education Institutions in Bulgaria and The Czech Republic is Expanding

It is necessary to expand the exchange of students on the educational programs and the cooperation between higher schools in Bulgaria and the Czech Republic. During their meeting in Prague, the Acting Minister of Education and Science Prof. Dr. Sašo Penov and his Czech colleague Prof. Dr. Vladimir Baláš, Minister of Education, Youth and Sports, united around this.

The subject of the conversation was the upcoming signing of a new Agreement on cooperation in the field of education and science between the two countries. The ministers shared their views on the state and prospects of education in Bulgaria and the Czech Republic, and on the role of the ministries of education.

Prof. Dr. Penov and his Czech colleague found that in both countries education faces similar problems related to financing and the selection of personnel for education. They emphasized the importance of decent pay for teachers for the quality and effectiveness of schools’ work.

Recognition and harmonization of secondary education diplomas, as well as the preservation of the Bulgarian language lectureship at Charles University in Prague, were other topics discussed by the ministers. Bulgaria and the Czech Republic cooperate through the exchange of students, doctoral students, scientific and pedagogical workers for study and professional internships, support lecturers in Czech language and literature in Sofia and in Prague. In the Faculty of Philosophy of the Charles University in Prague, there is a department of “South Slavic and Balkan Studies” with a lecturer in Bulgarian from the academic year 2019/2020 until now. Bulgarian language, as a main subject, is taught in the specialty “South Slavic Studies”, with the profile “Bulgarian Studies” and as an elective subject in other faculties.

Bulgarian studies at Charles University has a more than 100-year tradition, with the teaching of the Bulgarian language beginning in 1916, the Ministry of Education and Culture informs.
