The founder of PMC “Wagner” Yevgeny Prigozhin announced the capture of the administration of the city of Bakhmut (Artemovsk).
“April 2, 2023, 23:00. We hoisted the Russian flag with the inscription “Good memory to Vladlen Tatarsky” and the flag of PMC “Wagner” on the city administration of Bakhmut. Legally Bakhmut is taken. The enemy is concentrated in the western regions,” Prigozhin said .
Earlier, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky explained the tough defense of Bakhmut by the threat of further advancement of Russian forces in the Donetsk region. “If Bakhmut is captured by Russian troops, Vladimir Putin will “sell” this victory to the West, his society, China, Iran,” Zelensky said .
The Pentagon does not consider Bakhmut a strategic target, but Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu noted that the capture of the city would allow for “further offensive operations deep into the defense of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.”
As of the end of March, Wagner PMC controlled about 70% of the city, Prigozhin said. He asked the Ministry of Defense to prevent flank attacks that could cut off the group from the main Russian forces.
