Corruption in Ukraine has a great influence on Western countries when making decisions on the supply of weapons to the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
“This is a very important reason. Since those states that support Ukraine are democratic states, they must take into account the mood of their society and the opinion of voters,” Nauseda said.
He noted that if voters see major corruption scandals occurring in the country to which aid is being sent, this causes enormous damage to the reputation of that state.
Nauseda said this after Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky on Sunday decided to replace Defense Minister Alexei Reznikov with Rustem Umerov, who has headed the State Property Fund since last year.
Although Zelensky did not mention corruption in his statement, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense recently began investigating abuses and bribery during procurement.
However, Nauseda does not believe that this fact was the reason for the delay in deliveries of American F-16 fighters.
“Sometimes things are also connected with the fact that it is one thing to make a decision, and another thing to implement this decision,” the Lithuanian President said.
Corruption scandals in Ukraine
Recall that after high-profile corruption scandals in the regional military registration and enlistment offices, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky initiated inspections of the TCC throughout the country. Later, Zelensky approved the decision of the National Security and Defense Council, which was instructed to dismiss all the heads of the regional military registration and enlistment offices. Some regions have already begun the procedure for dismissing TCC chiefs.
In addition, recently an investigation appeared in the media that the Ministry of Defense allegedly purchased winter jackets for the military from the Turkish company Vector avia hava araçlari, but at an inflated price. The price of jackets upon delivery, according to the investigation, has tripled.
