Cool Up, a German-financed program to upgrade cooling systems in Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and Turkey, is inviting companies and municipalities to submit proposals for demonstration projects that use natural refrigerants or no refrigerants for commercial air-conditioning, residential air-conditioning and commercial refrigeration.
Selected projects will receive technical, funding and marketing support.
Cool Up’s goal is to show that sustainable cooling is possible, feasible and safe in the MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region. Sustainable cooling, as defined by Cool Up Program, is affordable and safe cooling that meets users’ needs while having minimal impact on the environment.
“The demonstration projects will serve as role models for an accelerated and broad uptake of sustainable cooling in the MENA region [and Turkey],” says Cool Up on its website.
The deadline for submission of proposals is February 28, 2023. Proposals may be submitted here, where additional information is available.
Projects must focus on Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon and/or Turkey. Other criteria include:
- Energy saving potential
- High impact (scalability and commercial viability)
- Replicability
- Domestically produced and/or distributed technologies (considered an advantage)
- Preference for new in-kind technology in the specific country (no support for early-stage R&D technologies)
- Compatibility with a fully renewable energy supply
- Availability of spare parts and after-sales service (if not already available, it needs to be created with the project setup)
Anyone can submit project ideas for the competition; however, Cool Up is particularly interested in working with:
- Building owners or investors (private or public)
- Retail and hospitality organizations, e.g., supermarkets, hotels and restaurants
- Municipalities
- Architects, technical advisors and engineers
- Local equipment manufacturers that are converting to natural refrigerants.
Cool Up will initially create a short list of applicants, who will be contacted by a Cool Up expert to gather additional information.
The MENA region has showed a significant increase in demand for cooling, driven by growing population, urbanization and higher living standards. In addition, the region’s energy demand is expected to rise by 50% by 2040. To avoid growing f-gas emissions, Cool Up is focused on helping with a rapid transition to natural refrigerants.
