Farkhod Odinaev, one of the Tajik opposition activists abroad, reported that employees of the electricity grid in the city of Gissar deprived his mother of light and heat.
“Electricity workers from the city of Gissar, together with police officers, came to the village of Turdibobo and cut off power to the house where my mother lives. They took my aunt with them, who opened the gate for them. Electricity workers cut the wires without explanation and left. “My mother has been sitting without electricity for the third day,” Farkhod Odinaev told a Radio Ozodi correspondent on October 16.
Our attempts to get comments from the management of the electrical network department of the city of Gissar were in vain.
47-year-old Farkhod Odinaev defends the rights of Tajik migrants who came to Europe. He was one of the participants in the protest on September 29: on that day, a group of Tajik refugees held a protest in Berlin against the visit of Emomali Rahmon near the meeting place of the leaders of Central Asian countries and the German Chancellor.
Let us remind you that Farkhod Odinaev was detained on September 25, 2019 at the Lithuanian-Belarusian border and spent 43 days in a pre-trial detention center in the city of Grodno. Odinaev was released after the Belarusian authorities refused a request from the Prosecutor General’s Office of Tajikistan to arrest and extradite the oppositionist to his homeland
“When we talk about problems, the authorities, instead of addressing them, detain our close relatives. Lately they have been using a different method of putting pressure on us: leaving our family and friends without light and warmth. We condemn these illegal actions and demand that the authorities stop persecuting our relatives,” added Farkhod Odinaev.
Prior to this, at least three representatives of the Tajik opposition said that employees of electrical networks cut wires for no reason and deprived their relatives and friends of electricity. On October 12, Oyishamo Abdulloeva , the mother of one of the leaders of the Tajik opposition abroad, Sharofiddin Gadoev, reported that the day before, employees of the electrical network department of the Farkhor district cut off power to her house. According to the woman, she has diabetes and it is difficult for her to live without electricity in the house. Oyisha Mirzoeva, the stepmother of the chairman of the banned Group 24 movement in Tajikistan, Suhrob Zafar, also reported that electricity network employees came to her house and cut the electrical wires. Another representative of the Tajik opposition abroad previously reported that the authorities cut off power to his relatives’ house in the Khatlon region. The authorities do not comment on their actions.
Representatives of the Tajik opposition abroad previously reported that after the protests in Berlin, Tajik law enforcement agencies detained and interrogated their relatives. The international human rights organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) stated on October 6 that after the protests that took place on September 28-29 in Berlin, about 50 relatives of opposition members living abroad were detained and interrogated in Tajikistan. Many of those detained were released home after interrogation.
