President of Montenegro Yakov Milatovic said after his inauguration that the country belongs to a united Europe and is ready to support all initiatives accelerating its membership in the EU.
Back in April, Milatovic said that official Podgorica would continue to 100% support EU policy and Western sanctions against the Russian Federation due to “Russian aggression in Ukraine.” According to him, it is “unrealistic to expect” Montenegro to refuse to recognize the self-proclaimed independence of Kosovo.
Presidential elections were held in Montenegro in April this year . Milo Djukanovic, who led the republic in various positions, was defeated. The ex-president congratulated the current head of state, Yakov Milatovich, on his victory.
In January of this year, Montenegro joined all the EU anti-Russian sanctions adopted since September 14. The list includes North Macedonia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Ukraine, as well as the countries of the European Free Trade Area (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway).
