Tunisian Port Authority Six-Tugboat Order Set to Modernise Fleet

Tunisia’s national port and maritime authority has ordered a new fleet of azimuth stern drive (ASD) tugs from Med Marine to enhance its ship handling and towage capabilities.

The Office of the Merchant Marine and Ports (OMMP) will add six 28-m tugboats with 60 tonnes of traction force once they are built at Eregli Shipyard in Turkey. Med Marine will build these harbour and ship escort tugs to Robert Allan Ltd’s RAstar 2800 design over the next year and hopes this contract will be the start of a wider relationship between OMMP and the shipbuilder.

“OMMP’s trust in us is a testament to our commitment to delivering exceptional vessels. We are fully committed to meeting and exceeding the demands and expectations of OMMP,” said Med Marine chief executive Hakan Şen.

When delivered, these tugs will conduct towing and harbour operations for OMMP, which is the authority for Tunisian ports.

OMMP is responsible for all ships and goods passing through the Tunisian ports. Its vessels handle diverse maritime traffic, containers, roro cargo and cruise passengers.

OMMP runs terminals for tankers, bulk carriers, ferries, cruise liners and container ships.

It can expect trade to increase through these ports from next year, as shipowners avoid using European ports after the introduction of emissions trading for ships calling at ports in the European Union, in January 2024.
