UNESCO Designates Tunisia’s Djerba Island as a World Heritage Site


The UN Educational and Cultural Agency, UNESCO on Monday (18/9/2023) added Djerba Island in Tunisia to the list of World Heritage Sites . UNESCO’s decision was announced during the 45th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

This decision brings the number of UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Tunisia to nine. The list includes the El Jem Amphitheater, the Archaeological Site of Carthage, the Medina of Tunis, the Ichkeul National Park, the Punic City of Kerkuane and its Necropolis, Kairouan, the Medina of Sousse, and the archaeological site of Dougga, the last of which was added in 1997. 

Djerba, covering an area of ​​nearly 500 square kilometers, is located in the Gulf of Gabes in the Mediterranean Sea.

With a population of approximately 160,000 people, this resort island is a popular destination for foreign tourists visiting Tunisia.

The island is renowned for its religious diversity, with ancient mosques, churches and synagogues, as well as stunning natural scenery. Its wide white sandy beaches are a major magnet for tourists with the Mediterranean Sea being an ideal location for relaxing and swimming, as reported by Middle East Monitor

Djerba is also known for its various festivals and cultural celebrations. These events often include musical performances, dancing and traditional culinary delights, giving visitors the opportunity to experience the rich local culture in more depth.

Most importantly, Djerba is a special destination for thousands of Jewish visitors who come to see the El Ghriba synagogue, built 2,400 years ago for Jewish worship and ritual.
